Most Common Uses of Bottled Gases

Bottled gases are gases that have been compressed and stored in cylinders for a wide variety of uses. Different gases and gas mixes can be stored and used in a range of industries by professionals and at home for personal use by individuals.

As bottle gas suppliers, we know how useful bottled gases can be. Here’s a look at the most common uses for bottled gases:

Welding

Whether someone is a professional welder or just picking up a new hobby, bottled gases are a crucial component in the welding process. The gas bottles needed for welding are known as shielding gases, as they create a barrier between the part being welded which protects from oxygen and water vapour. The reaction of the molten weld to these elements can create problems with the weld, so shielding gas is used as a protective layer.

Gases in welding are usually argon and CO2 mixes. Different combination amounts are used for welding various metals. You can get TIG welding gas and MIG welding gas depending on the type of welding you’re doing.

Portable Gas Heaters

One of the most common uses for bottled gas is in portable gas heaters with the main benefit being that they give you instant heat and keep energy bills down. They’re ideal for heating a single office, outdoor studio or room in your home when you don’t need to heat the entire building.

Portable gas heaters use Calor gas bottles, which when combined with a standard portable gas heater, will give you just over 100 hours of heat. This makes them a convenient and cost-effective way to keep warm, particularly in those chilly winter months.

BBQs

BBQs are a popular UK pastime in the summer months. For people who don’t want to mess around with charcoal or struggle to get a fire started, gas BBQs are incredibly popular.

To get a gas BBQ working, you need gas cylinders like propane gas to attach to the BBQ to get it fired up. You can use them for commercial BBQs, camping BBQs and other outdoor applications like patio heaters.

Making Beer

For bars and pubs or people just wanting to brew their own beer at home, home bar gas is needed to add that delicious fizz to beverages. Carbon dioxide and nitrogen mixtures are used to carbonate the beer to give it its distinctive bubbles. CO2 is pumped into the liquid, which is then absorbed, allowing the drink to become fully carbonated.

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is vital during the summer months for commercial buildings to keep staff and clients cool. Nitrogen bottles can be used to keep air conditioners healthy and clean by ensuring that the system is only circulating filtered air.

Air conditioners are susceptible to oxidisation, and the system then becomes contaminated. Nitrogen gas can be used to purge an air conditioner without damaging the environment or the system. It helps to absorb moisture trapped in the system, allowing it to function more effectively, and flush out contaminants, ensuring the circulating air is clean.

Food and Wine Preservation

Bottled gas can be used to help preserve food and wine. In a process known as Controlled Atmospheric Storage, food-grade nitrogen is used to modify the atmosphere to reduce the likelihood of microorganisms growing and slowing down the oxidation process of fats.

Nitrogen is tasteless and odourless, making it the ideal choice for this process as it will not alter the food products. It settles over the food or wine to create a barrier against oxygen, reducing the oxidation process. We have an extensive range of nitrogen cylinders on offer for all of your food and wine preservation needs!

Blowing Up Balloons

One of the most popular uses for bottled gas for both businesses and individuals is for inflating balloons. Blowing up a large number of balloons for a party or event is so much easier with helium balloon gas, cutting down on effort and preparation time considerably.

Helium canisters are easy to use and are available in many different sizes from Bottle Gases, including the very popular sizes of helium canisters for 30 balloons and 50 balloons. Helium is a lot lighter than air, and when pumped into a balloon, it essentially floats in a pool of air. Provided the balloon is lighter than the air it displaces, the balloon will float.
